Forbidden Hearts

Representing at the America Israel Cultural Foundation Awards Ceremony, Tel Aviv Museum, 2001

My work explores themes of occupation and the corrupting influence of power. It confronts the imposition of one culture upon another, as I expressed in a recent exhibition. Specifically, I addressed the idea that one people (Jews) should not compel another (Palestinians) to adopt its language (Hebrew) or integrate into its culture of the occupiers. The performance took place on a rotating stage and involved acts using live, tactile materials. These included sewing chicken hearts embroidered with Stars of David, symbolizing complex layers of identity and power. Additionally, I created Israeli flags in the colors of the Palestinian flag, delicately embroidered onto hard-boiled eggs, further emphasizing themes of tension, resilience, and fragility.
